
Summer’s the perfect time to get in an intense week or three of music-making. Here’s a sampling of music camps – including the Lafayette Summer Music Workshop, pictured above – for winds, strings, jazz buffs and other musicians. To add a camp to the list, send us an e-mail.
Lafayette Summer Music Camp: You can’t beat the location for this premiere jazz camp. This Lafayette-based day camp ran from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. August 3-8 last year, at Stanley Middle School. The 2008 faculty lineup included legendary jazz trombonist Wayne Wallace, pianist Frank Martin and percussionist John Santos, and cost $605, including buffet lunches and plentiful snacks.
Cazadero Music Camp: This 50-year-old performing arts camp in the redwoods near Monte Rio and Guerneville runs sessions for high school band, orchestra and jazz musicians each summer. Campers sleep under the stars in cots set up on platform decks. In addition to the performing arts, the camp also includes dances, campfires, arts and crafts, and recreational sports. Summer 2009 dates: June 22-August 8, with the high school session running July 28-Aug. 8. Cost: $1,485.
Pacific Music Camp: This famous, 64-year-old music camp is centered on the University of the Pacific campus, home to one of hte West Coast’s most renowned music conservatories and the Brubeck Jazz Institute. In 2009, the audition-only Brubeck Jazz camp will run June 14-20, and the high school orchestra and band camps will run July 12-18. Housing is provided in the Pacific dorms, with meals in the campus dining hall. Registration forms should go online in December or early January, but in 2008, the jazz camp cost $625, the other music camps $575, with discounts if you were a county or all-state honor band member.
